PostDeploy as a Better Stack alternative
PostDeploy is the flat-priced alternative for a small project: uptime monitors and cron jobs on separate allowances, plus analytics and errors, on one plan you can predict. Better Stack runs deeper on incident response, and its paid pricing is a meter across seats, monitors and heartbeats. Pick PostDeploy when the bill should not scale with every object.
What Better Stack sells
Better Stack sells monitoring and incident response in one product: uptime and heartbeat checks, on-call scheduling, status pages, logs, metrics, traces, error tracking and session replay, to teams collapsing a PagerDuty plus Datadog plus Statuspage stack into one vendor.
Side by side, before you commit
Their published free tier against what you get on PostDeploy, because that is where the decision starts.
| Better Stack | PostDeploy | |
|---|---|---|
| Uptime and API monitors | 10 | 20 |
| Cron and heartbeat jobs | 10 | 20 |
| Check interval floor, free | 3 minutes | 5 minutes |
| Alert channels | Slack and email | Email, Slack, Discord |
| Analytics on the same plan | Not offered | Included on every plan |
| Pricing model past free | Metered per seat, monitor, heartbeat and page | Flat plan, $5 a month |
Why people look for a Better Stack alternative
There is no plan to move to. Past the free tier you assemble a bill: $34 a month per responder seat, $25 per additional 50 monitors, $20 per additional 10 heartbeats, $15 per extra status page, plus per-GB telemetry.
The add-on prices surprise people. Removing Better Stack branding from a status page is $250 a month, per page. Password protection is $50 a month, per page.
Heartbeats cost four times what monitors cost per unit: $0.50 per monitor per month against $2.00 per heartbeat per month.
Free members cannot see monitors, incidents, on-call or status pages. Anyone who needs to look at a monitor consumes a responder licence.
What Better Stack does well
Better Stack runs real incident response and broader checks: on-call rotations, escalation policies, SMS and voice alerting, multi-location verification, browser checks, plus logs, metrics, traces and session replay, none of which PostDeploy offers.
Where PostDeploy is different
A price you can predict. Indie is a flat $5 a month, covering 3 projects, 20 uptime monitors and 20 cron jobs. On Better Stack's meter the same shape is monitor blocks plus heartbeat blocks plus a responder seat, each on its own line.
Cron jobs are not a premium unit. They have their own allowance on the same plan; on Better Stack a heartbeat costs four times per unit what a monitor costs.
Discord alerts on every PostDeploy plan. Better Stack's free tier is Slack and email only.
Cookieless analytics on the same plan and the same projects, so the visitor numbers live next to the uptime history.
A smaller surface on purpose. PostDeploy is uptime, cron, analytics and errors per project, priced flat.
What switching gets you
Try PostDeploy if
- You are one to three people and the responder-seat price is most of your bill.
- Your heartbeat count is climbing and $20 per additional ten has stopped being funny.
- You want to know what next month costs before next month.
- You want visitor numbers for the same project without adding an analytics vendor.
What moving actually costs
- 1 Export monitors through the REST API or the Terraform provider: check frequency, method, headers, body, keyword assertions, expected status codes, SSL toggles and regions.
- 2 Non-HTTP monitors do not migrate, they end. UDP, POP3, IMAP and SMTP, ping and browser transaction checks have no PostDeploy equivalent today.

Every heartbeat URL (
uptime.betterstack.com/api/v1/heartbeat/<token>) is baked into a script or CI job and must be edited. Any use of the/failsuffix or exit-code and output payloads needs rework, because PostDeploy heartbeats take a plain success ping. - 4 On-call schedules, escalation policies and incident roles are abandoned rather than migrated. This is the largest cost of leaving.
- 5 Uptime SLA history and incident timelines are not portable, so historical reporting restarts at zero. Telemetry is the exception if you configured your own S3 bucket.
- 6 Annual billing carries a 22 to 25 percent discount, so a mid-year switch strands prepaid credit unless the 60-day guarantee still applies.
Questions
How does the PostDeploy free tier compare with Better Stack's?
Better Stack checks faster on free: 3-minute intervals against 5. PostDeploy Indie has 20 cron jobs against their 10 heartbeats, adds Discord alongside email and Slack, and includes error tracking and analytics on the same plan.
What does Better Stack cost for 75 monitors?
At their published per-unit prices: $50 a month in monitor blocks, before any seat. The same monitor allowance is inside the $5 PostDeploy Indie plan.
Does PostDeploy do on-call scheduling?
No. PostDeploy opens an incident and notifies the channels you configured: email, Slack and Discord on every plan, webhooks and Telegram on paid plans. Rotations, escalation policies and overrides are not part of the product.
